Mathis Valin just misses the podium in Spain

Kawasaki Racing Team MX2's Mathis Valin narrowly missed the podium at Almonte in Andalucia to sit fifth in the FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship standings after two rounds.

Top-six starts in each moto established the platform for the solid result around a rugged high-speed track. Hard-worked passes on lap three and lap nine of eighteen in the first moto saw the French teenager convert a sixth-placed start to fourth and he closed onto the rear wheel of the defending champion for third in the closing laps but came up just one second short of a further pass. Switching to a different gate for race two he again emerged sixth from turn one and spent half the race searching for the opportunity to move into fifth. He finally made the move at half-distance but fourth was already too far and he concentratrated on riding home a safe fifth until a slip halfway round the final lap cost one position in the moto but could not endanger his fourth overall on the day and fifth in the series standings.

Mathis Valin: "The first moto was quite good; I had a pretty good start, found my flow and had a good end to the moto as I was pushing Längenfelder. The second moto was a bit more difficult. I stayed a little too long behind Everts; I couldn't pass him and that cost me a lot of energy to attack him for so many laps. Then I had a small crash on the last lap which cost me one position. I could push hard both motos and I showed I have the speed but I have to work on the passes; MX2 is very competitive so it's not easy to pass anywhere; I need to pass more quickly in future."

Antti Pyrhönen (KRT team manager): "We saw again this weekend that Mathis has the potential to progress even more in this highly-competitive MX2 class. He had decent starts and showed good speed and consistency in both motos; he made only one error on the last lap of race two which cost him one position but overall he had two consistent motos. He has something to build on from here; it was our target to create the pace level in the first few GPs and go step-by-step towards the front as the season progresses."

DRT Kawasaki's Kay Karssemakers continues to establish himself as the leading rider in the series without full factory support. The Dutch youngster used his well-earnt gate-pick from Qualifying to finish the first thirty-four minute moto within sight of several factory bikes in tenth and, his confidence boosted yet further, he made early passes through the first few turns of moto two to run eighth, with fifth in his sights, for half of race to eventually finish a lonely ninth for tenth overall. He is now thirteenth in the series standings.

Kay Karssemakers: "My best-ever GP! I was already happy with my ninth in Qualifying yesterday and I was riding good again in the first moto today, right behind Resulis all moto, to finish tenth. I was riding even better in the second moto with good lap times and I was really close to the top-six so I was happy with that. Now I'm looking to progress even further as the season develops."
