Hard-charging fourth in Quali for Romain Febvre

Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP's Romain Febvre raced impressively up the leaderboard to earn fourth in Qualifying for the Portuguese round of the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship at Agueda.

The Frenchman quickly advanced to sixth by the end of the opening lap and moved past KRT teammate Pauls Jonass for fifth on lap two. There was already a gap of several seconds to those ahead but he stuck to the task, setting the fast laps on the track, to catch and sweep into fourth in lap eight of thirteen with a decisive pass on his closest rival in the points chase, thus further consolidating third in the series  standings.

Romain Febvre: "I  found a good rhythm on the track but I was just too far back at the start. I tried changing my starting technique this week but it was worse so I will switch back tomorrow. It's a little frustrating because with a better start I could be battling with the leaders but from where I started today you have no chance to come back to the guys at the front. It's a pity because the track was really nice to ride."

Pauls Jonass showed he is getting stronger by the week as he set sixth-fastest time in Timed Practice and the Latvian took a good jump at the gate to hold down fifth on the first lap. He surrendered a position to Febvre on lap two but continued to run top-six in a fierce battle until he fell victim to an aggressive move on the penultimate lap to earn seventh gate-pick tomorrow.

Pauls Jonass: "I showed good speed all day; it was just a pity to lose that position to Adamo at the end. I always enjoy riding here and I got a decent start; I just went a little wide at the first turn or it could have been even better. I had a really good speed through the first few laps; that's what I need to do more often to learn the pace of the front guys."

Kawasaki Racing Team MX2's Mathis Valin took a massive holeshot in Qualifying for the
FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship and was looking good for his second successive pole until he jumped too far on a table-top jump, being thrown over the bars after landing in the braking bumps. The organisers reacted promptly to red flag the moto as the French teenager lay winded in the track; thankfully he was able to walk  away from the scene after a few minutes but sat out the rerun. He remains sixth in the series standings. A decision on whether he will race tomorrow will be taken in the morning.

Antti Pyrhönen (KRT team manager): "Luckily Mathis is OK; of course he feels a little second-hand at the moment but, in view of the size of the crash, we can be happy that it was only a scary moment with no injuries. We will wait for the morning to see if he can race tomorrow; safety first, so we check the situation after a good night's sleep."

DRT Kawasaki's Kay Karssemakers gated just outside the top-ten from mid-gate but showed commitment during the opening lap of each with a a series of aggressive passes to push forward to seventh. Racing head-to-head with factory riders he eventually finished a strong eighth - his sixth top-ten Qualifying of the season - to earn a better gate-pick for both of tomorrow' GP motos.

Kay Karssemakers: "I felt comfortable already in Timed Practice even though I still needed to work on a couple of sections. The first half of the season went really fast, but I'm looking to step it up during the second half. The Quali moto went well. I made a really good start the first time before the red flag came out. My start was not quite as good the second time but I felt good on the track and could make some good passes to finish eighth, on the wheel of seventh. Now I am looking foward to two good starts and fight to the end tomorrow."

Venum Bud Racing Kawasaki's Francisco Garcia continued his domination of the European EMX250 Motocross Championship. Having taken his fifth pole of the season by 1.6 seconds the Spanish teenager stormed to the holeshot in the first point-scoring race of the weekend and immediately sprinted clear to build a lead of four seconds ove the chasers already on the opening lap. With none of his rivals able to match his pace he continued to extend his lead throughout the race, eventually taking the chequered flag twenty-six seconds ahead of second. With his twelfth  - and sixth consecutive - moto success of the season he has extended his lead in the championship to ninety-five points.

Francisco Garcia: "Another amazing victory. I am feeling so strong at the moment; I work for this every day, and my family and so many friends are here this weekend to see me. The track was so nice after the weather of recent weeks. I even took the holeshot and could build a big gap; I wasn't even on the limit. That was my sixth win in-a-row and a big lead in the points but I will stay focused to the end of the season."

Bud teammate Jake Cannon made life difficult for himself when slips in his later attempts to post a quick lap during Timed Training left him with eighteenth gate-pick for both points-scoring motos. A typically aggressive ride saw the Australian teenager already into the top-ten at the completion of the opening lap but he found further progress up the fast-moving leaderboard difficult and eventually finished thirteenth after a fall three laps from the finish, but he retains second place in the series standings.
